16 May 2017
Headline inflation rate in April 2017 was 3.4% down from 3.5% recorded in March 2017. According to the data released from Statistics Botswana, inflation fell significantly for some commodity groups of Food & Non-alcoholic Beverages (from 4.4% to 3.8%), Clothing & Footwear (from 3.8% to 3.4%) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services (from 8.4% to 1.9%) – largely because of a fall in the rate of price increase for insurance), while other commodity groups had marginal declines of 0.1% (Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco, Transport, Education, Restaurants & Hotels and Health). Inflation was unchanged for Furnishing, Household Equipment & Routine Maintenance and Communication at 3.6% and 0.1% respectively. However, inflation was partly offset by rising inflation for Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels which rose from 2.8% to 6.7% and Recreation and Culture from 1.7% to 2.4%. The rise in inflation for Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels is attributable to the increased tarrifs in the utilities sector effective from 1 April 2017.
